Things to Know About Our Moon

Other than thinking about sleep when we see the moon, there remains to be a lot of things we still don’t know about it. There are several cool moon facts and we continue to get to know the moon better through explorations.

Being the only natural satellite of the Earth, several expeditions have been conducted to better know the moon. The distance between the moon and the Earth is 238857 miles and it remains to be the fifth largest moon in the Milky Way. The moon, just like the earth also has several mountain ranges. Mon Huygens is the name given to the tallest mountain of the Moon and it is only half the height of our very own Mt. Everest.

Cool moon facts will never be complete without talking about gravity. Astronauts only experience about one fifth of the gravity when they are on the moon. We always weigh less when we are on the moon because gravity is not that strong compared to the pull of the earth. Because of this, they would appear to be hopping around when they walk on the surface of the moon.

The world’s first moon landing took place in 1969. The Apollo 11 mission, which was launched by the United States carried the first man to ever set foot on the surface of the moon. The space rocket carried Neil Armstrong making him the first man to ever set foot on the moon.

The pockmarked surface of the moon is also visible from the earth. When comets and asteroids collide with the moon’s surface, it leaves huge craters. Because the moon doesn’t have any atmosphere, these objects create a huge impact when they hit the moon.

It has been agreed on by most scientists that one of the cool moon facts is its lack of water. Because of the lack of water, it would be difficult for man to start a new life on the moon. Of course, there’s the extreme temperature on the surface as one of the primary reasons.

Temperature on the moon during daytime is so hot that it is even past the boiling point of water. During day time, temperature can reach up to 107 degrees Celsius and it becomes abnormally cold at night. One can also easily freeze to death at night on the moon with temperatures at -153 degrees Celsius.

The list of trivia and cool moon facts continue to grow as we send more and more explorations on its surface. We still have a lot of things to discover about our only natural satellite and the moon continues to influence the way we live our lives.
